Berry College Moon Gallery recently featured a two-person exhibition, “A Social Practice”.
“A Social Practice” featured the prints of Noah Breuer and the paintings of Donna Woodley. The work explores labor, authorship and appropriation as well as human connection and the importance of individual stories
Breuer’s work shows the visual legacy of his Jewish family’s textile printing business, Carl Breuer and Sons (CB&S), founded in 1897 and seized by the Nazis in 1939. Breuer’s textiles tell the story of his family’s persecution and immigration. As a part of the exhibition, participants can create a CB&S textile on rubbing stations.
Breuer is a visual artist, printmaker and assistant professor at Auburn University in Auburn, Ala. His work is in the permanent collections of the Watson Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of America Art and more. In 2018, he had solo exhibitions at Space Gallery in Portland, Maine, Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, Calif. and Left Field Gallery in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Woodley is a visual artist in Nashville, Tenn., and an adjunct professor at Austin Peay State University and Tennessee State University. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions at Middle Tennessee State University and the Frist Art Museum in Nashville, Tenn., as well as Monthaven Arts & Cultural Center in Hendersonville, Tenn. Nashville Scene magazine named her Nashville’s Best New Artist in 2016.
Woodley’s work examines black culture and the black experience in American culture. Informed stereotypes, perceptions of beauty, cultural similarities and differences, esteem and mental health, her work confronts the historic and current value of black people within American society.
