Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption
The 2024 First-Year Reading Experience book is Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson.
Just Mercy is “An unforgettable true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us, and a clarion call to end mass incarceration in America — from one of the most inspiring lawyers of our time.” First-year students will reflect on their own personal and professional journeys as they engage with this book throughout the year.
All first-year students will receive the book at in-person SOAR sessions in June or through the mail if unable to attend. During Viking Venture, students will join their first-year seminar classmates, instructors and mentor to discuss the book. The book conversation will culminate in a lecture during the Fall semester related to the book’s focus on empathy, redemption and mercy.
