A Berry College freshman recently received the inaugural Roberto Clemente Scholarship.
The first recipient, Nurah Williams, is a psychology major from Takoma Park, Md. She was recognized at a dinner celebrating the 50th anniversary of Clemente being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Pittsburgh.
The Berry College Roberto Clemente Scholarship was established by Berry alum and Board of Trustees member Roger Lusby, and his wife, Candy Lusby, in conjunction with the Clemente Foundation. Scholarship recipients are given $21,000 annually in honor of Clemente’s number 21. Preference for awarding this scholarship will be given to students from Puerto Rico and those who have completed military service or are actively enrolled in a reserve status. If no student from Puerto Rico qualifies Berry will award the scholarship to a Latinx/Hispanic student.
Clemente was the first Caribbean and Latin American player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He also served in the U.S. Marines and was inducted into the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame.
