A Berry College biology professor recently received the True Longleaf Champion award on behalf of The Longleaf Alliance.
The Longleaf Alliance honors both individuals and organizations for their notable efforts to longleaf restoration across the southeastern U.S. region jointly with the Biennial Longleaf Conference, the alliance’s regional conference.
Dana Professor of Biology and Berry American Chestnut Project Director Martin Cipollini received the prestigious award due to “the important work he has done over the years and continues to do to raise awareness and actively manage longleaf in the montane regions of northwest Georgia and northeast Alabama,” said Longleaf Alliance president Carol Denof.
Cipollini began his Berry career in 1995 and has flourished for almost three decades. During his time, he has served as the biology department chair and director and the project director of Berry’s national science foundation research experiences for undergraduates in ecology and environmental biology alongside his achievements listed above.
Outside of Berry, Cipollini actively works as a research collaborator on the Spicebush Project for the Smithsonian Institution and is the chair of the Northwest Georgia Working Group for the Talladega-Mountain Longleaf Pine Conservation Partnership.
Cipollini received a master’s degree in biology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Pennsylvania, Indiana and a doctoral degree in Ecology from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
