Exhibition Information

utility is a juried exhibition of functional work in ceramics. Artists from across the United States are invited to submit work that is designed for a practical use. utility seeks to showcase innovative work in clay that fulfills a specific need, is well made, and expresses a clear vision. 

Juror Information

Heather Mae Erickson is an artist and Assistant Professor of Undergraduate and Graduate Ceramics at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. Her work has been shown extensively in exhibitions around the world and is represented in numerous collections and galleries. She has held a residency at the prestigious Archie Bray Foundation in Montana, was awarded a Fulbright research fellowship in Helsinki, and was a resident artist at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia. Erickson has received awards from the Museum of Modern Art in New York and from the Korea Biennale International, among others. From 2009-12, she was the Robert Chapman Turner Teaching Fellow in Ceramic Art at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Born in Delaware, Heather Mae Erickson earned her BFA in Crafts with a concentration in Art Education from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia and MFA in Ceramic Art from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan.

Artists will be notified by Wednesday, 30 September 2020
Work can be received from Wednesday 30 September until Wednesday 7 October 2020

An entry fee of $15 is required (current Berry staff, students, and faculty are NOT eligible to apply). Work submitted should be able to be displayed safely on a pedestal with a 12 X 12 inch top.
Submitting work to be considered for the exhibition acknowledges that you agree to the following terms:

  • Shipment of work to and from Berry College is the responsibility of the artist (return postage must be included in reusable container (no Styrofoam peanuts please)). 
  • Permission is granted to photograph or use digital images of artwork to publicize the exhibition.
  • While every care will be taken handling the work, Berry College is not responsible for any damage that may occur to the piece either in transit or in the Moon Gallery.
  • Berry College reserves the right not to exhibit work that differs significantly from the image submitted.
