Professor of History
Laurence W. Marvin has taught at Berry College since 1998. He offers a variety of history courses, among them both halves of the Foundations world history surveys, upper division level European history courses before 1300, western military history, and the departmental capstone course.
Teaching Interests
As Professor of History at Berry College, Laurence W. Marvin teaches both halves of the Foundations world history surveys (History 154 and History 155). His upper division-level courses include History 307: Meet the Romans; History 311: Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages; History 347: Military History of the Western World, and the senior capstone course, History 491: Historiography. In 2010 he received the Mary S. and Samuel Poe Carden award from Berry College for outstanding Teaching, Scholarship, and Service.
Research Interests
Professor Marvin specializes in the European Middle Ages, specifically the long twelfth century (AD 1095-1225), the crusades, and military history. His 2024 book, The Damietta Crusade, was published by Oxford University Press, while his earlier monograph, The Occitan War, (2008; Polish translation, 2017) was published by Cambridge University Press. In addition he has published a co-edited volume, a number of scholarly articles, book chapters, encyclopedia entries, and magazine articles on crusade history and medieval military history.
