Event Description Presenter: Dr. Wilfred McClay Presenter Credentials: SunTrust Bank Chair of Excellence in Humanities and Professor of History at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Member of the National Council on the Humanities, the advisory board for the National Endowment for the Humanities.1995 Merle Curti Award of the Organization of American Historians for the best book in American intellectual history. Recipient of fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Academy of Education. Educated at St. Johns College (Annapolis) and the Johns Hopkins University. Has taught at Tulane University, Pepperdine University, the University of Rome, Georgetown University, and the University of Dallas. Event Description: The talk will explore the tensions at work in the production of modern commercial popular culture, and ask whether the popular American vocal music produced in the first half of the 20th century might provide us with a particularly fine example of democratic excellence, an example that can have meaning for artists and audiences today. |
