Event Description Presenter: Jonathan Gayles,Associate Professor of African-American Studies at Georgia State University and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Learning for the College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Gayles will present his documentary film "White Scripts and Black Supermen," along with a lecture about black representation in comic books, followed by a question and answer session. As an award winning documentary, the film itself represents the high quality of artist tradition references in the criteria. Further, the film and discussion will encourage students to consider how issues of media representation affect audiences and the media industry itself. Given the lack of diversity amongst the student body, the event can encourage students to reflect on how taken-for-granted visual strategies can impact those from other cultures and backgrounds. Finally, the event promotes ethical reasoning by questioning who creates images, why, and with what effect? |
